Alexandria, Egypt, Palmyrene, ca. 270 CE. A unique coin from the period when the Palmyrene seccesionist movement away from the Roman Empire was in full bloom. Coin shows Vaballathus (Palmyrene King, 266 to 273 BCE) & Aurelian (Roman Emperor, 270 to 275 BCE). Vaballathus was the son of Queen Zenobia. Zenobia struck a treaty with Aurelian to put her son in power in this region of the middle east. The treaty was short-lived and both mother and son were defeated. Size: 2cm in diameter, 3.4 grams. Provenance: Ex-private East Coast collection.
