Description:

Pre-Columbian, Panama, Gran Cocle., ca. 800 - 1200 CE. A large polychrome effigy jar modeled as a broad human head with protruding nose, lidded eyes, and a toothy grin enlivened by bold painted chevrons and sweeping volutes, all surmounted by a tall cylindrical neck with everted rim and a slender, banded spout-handle pierced at the tip. Hand-built of terracotta and finely burnished, the vessel is slip-painted in rich red, black, and cream, with small applied ear lugs and geometric panels that frame the visage; the globular body carries spiraling motifs that in Coclé iconography likely reference water, wind, or serpentine energy. Such anthropomorphic face-jars belong to the celebrated Conte/Macaracas polychrome tradition and were likely used to serve ritual beverages - perhaps cacao or chicha - in feasting or mortuary rites. Size: 10" W x 9.5" H x 10" D (25.4 cm W x 24.1 cm H x 25.4 cm D)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.
