Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle culture, Macaracas type, ca. 600 to 1200 CE. A superb pottery pedestal dish resting on a flared foot, the interior basin featuring an abstract animal. The terracotta is slipped in a creamy beige and black, red, and purple pigments create a bird with flared wings and spines like protrusions. The purple hue is indicative of the Macaracas style. Size: 11.25" Diameter x 5" H (28.6 cm x 12.7 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private Schuetz collection, Florida, USA; ex-Michaans Auction, March 2, 2011, and was sold to benefit the non-profit Folk Art International Resources for Education in California, USA

  • Condition: Repaired from several large pieces with infill and overpainting along the break lines. Chips and abrasion to pedestal foot. Nice preservation to motifs and light mineral / earthen deposits on the foot.
