Pre-Columbian, Panama, ca. 900 to 1200 CE. A lovely pottery jar in the form of a bird perched upon a pedestal, all is adorned in black and white geometric patterns atop a burgundy red ground. A tapered spout that doubles as a handle rises from the verso of the bird. Size (together): 5.2" Diameter x 6.9" H (13.2 cm x 17.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-The estate of Peter H. Tillou Collection, thence by descent. Acquired in the 1990s, collection # 175. Appraised by Marianne Huber in 2014.

  • Condition: Chip to rim of bird vessel and a few stable hairline fissures to edge of pedestal. Abrasions to interior of pedestal. Both have expected surface wear as shown, but are otherwise intact and in good condition with nice remaining pigments and light earthen deposits.
