Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A large wooden canoe prow shaped in the powerful form of a crocodile head, a revered creature in local belief systems. The prow is intricately incised with flowing, curvilinear patterns and raised motifs that accentuate the elongated snout and prominent eyes. The openwork carving along the jawline could also function as a handle when portaging the boat. In Sepik River cultures, such prows were more than mere decoration; they represented clan symbols or protective spirits believed to guide and shield the voyagers. Crocodiles, in particular, were seen as spiritual allies, their strength and connection to the water offering good fortune and safe passage. Once a canoe was no longer waterworthy, the prow was often cut free and preserved as a separate, powerful object, embodying ancestral and shamanic presences long after its time on the water. Size: 71" L x 10" W (180.3 cm x 25.4 cm)
