Oceania, Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A tall wood figure - perhaps representing an ancestor - standing upright on slender legs. The man is nude except for a conical cap that was a common style of men's dress in the early 20th century- their hair was gathered inside and protruded from the top. Carved figures were kept for remembrance and respect of ancestors, and acted as guardians that could be contacted for healing, luck, and protection. Size: 5.5" W x 29" H (14 cm x 73.7 cm)
