Lot 8D
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Paracas culture, ca. 600 to 200 BCE. A handsome pottery jar exemplifying the refined ceramic tradition of the Paracas culture, known for its dark, polished blackware and delicate painted decoration. The vessel is globular in form, with rounded shoulders rising to a short neck and outwardly flaring rim. Around the neck sits a painted collar outlined in red and yellow, divided into quadrants by narrow linear bands. The surface, though weathered with areas of earthen encrustation, still bears traces of its once lustrous finish, a hallmark of Paracas ceramics, which were often carefully burnished to a dark sheen. Paracas potters were masters of both form and finish, producing vessels that combined utility with elegance. Size: 6" Diameter x 6.8" H (15.2 cm x 17.3 cm)
This example, with its deep black slip and restrained painted accents, reflects the cultural emphasis on balance, refinement, and ritual significance. Such jars were likely used in funerary or ceremonial contexts, accompanying the elaborate burials for which Paracas culture is renowned.
