Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Paracas culture, ca. 600 to 200 BCE. A hand-formed pottery bowl of hemispherical form, decorated with a striking band of incised geometric motifs encircling the exterior. The vessel, burnished to a dark reddish-brown and black surface, features angular patterns composed of zigzags, stepped lines, and paired circles that may suggest stylized anthropomorphic or zoomorphic visages. Such imagery is characteristic of Paracas ceramic art, which frequently combined abstraction and symbolism to reference ritual, mythological, or cosmological themes. The Paracas culture, flourishing on Peru's arid south coast, is best known for its elaborate textiles, funerary practices, and early ceramic traditions that predate the Nazca. While their ceramics were often less polychrome than later Nazca works, Paracas artisans excelled in incised and post-fire painted decoration, producing vessels that reflect both utilitarian function and ceremonial significance. Size: 6.2" Diameter x 2.5" H (15.7 cm x 6.4 cm)
Bowls such as this one may have been used in ritual feasting, libations, or as funerary offerings accompanying the dead into richly furnished shaft tombs. The present piece, with its carefully incised motifs, demonstrates the early mastery of surface design that would later evolve into the bold iconographic styles of the Nazca. Its minimalist yet symbolically charged decoration captures the Paracas aesthetic balance between abstraction and meaning.
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated by QED Laboratory. A full report will accompany the item upon purchase.
