Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Cavernas, Paracas culture, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A beautiful textile panel fragment comprised of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of salmon, burgundy, cobalt, emerald, and wheat. The panel exhibits two identical figures, perhaps depicting a decapitator deity, each holding a trophy head in one hand and a ceremonial tumi in the other. A pair of abstract zoomorphic figures flank each deity's legs, and the deities' highly-abstract heads are surrounded by a radiating corona. Mounted on a fabric-lined wooden frame. Size (textile): 3.75" W x 7.75" H (9.5 cm x 19.7 cm); size (frame): 6.7" W x 10.75" H (17 cm x 27.3 cm).
