Central Asia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, or Kazakhstan, Uzbek people, ca. mid-20th century CE. This is a gorgeous suzani textile vest covered with silk embroidery and couching across the surface. The hand-woven cotton cloth is a dark indigo blue on the facing side, and the interior cotton lining is white. The word suzani is derived from the Persian "suzan" which translates as needle and the fine art of creating such textiles is known as "suzandozi" or needlework. The silk stiches create fine texture and sheen to the otherwise plain cotton textiles. The process - especially covering the whole surface of the cloth - was time consuming and suzanis were made by women for their daughter's dowry as well as for clothing, and household uses such as tablecloths, prayer mats, bedcovers, wall-hangings, and even as horse blankets. Displayed on a child sized cloth and wood mannequin. Size: 20" L x 17" W (50.8 cm x 43.2 cm); 24" H (61 cm) on included custom stand.
