Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, North Coast, ca. 1000-1400 CE. This Andean textile is composed of wool from alpaca or llama and cotton dyed with natural dyes that have retained their vibrant hues, mainly red, rose, and brown. The upper portion of the panel features miniature brown feline figures on lighter cocoa hued background. The lower portion features diagonal registers of nested profiled avian heads delineated with characteristic beaks alternating with zigzag lightning motifs. Avian iconography was particularly favored by the ancient Peruvians. Birds in general were associated with celestial journeys of shamans and priests who underwent ceremonial rituals with the intent of transforming themselves into eagles, coastal birds, owls, and other revered birds. 8-1/2"L x 8-1/2"W at widest
