Description:

Claudio Jimenez Quispe (Peruvian, 1959-present) A wooden retablo enclosing a remarkable scene of wire skeletons covered in a plaster mixed with potatoes - the starchy vegetables form a solid medium to paint with tempera once dry. Battery powered string lights are set in the top to illuminate the interior, and while death is clearly all around, the scene is festive with music, dancing, and food. Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is celebrated in Peru as a day of remembrance, especially amongst the Indigenous Quechua people. Death rides overhead on a horse with birds and a dog howling at a skull moon. The inner doors are painted with the living burying and cremating the deceased. Claudio Jimenez's art reflects his life growing up in Peru; while Spanish Colonial retablos are traditionally religious, contemporary artists have reclaimed the artform often incorporating historical or cultural themes. Claudio Jimenez is brother to Nicario Jimenez, also an internationally renowned retablo artist. Size: 16.25" L x 5.25" W x 16.75" H (41.3 cm x 13.3 cm x 42.5 cm)

Scuffs and abrasions to wood retablo case exterior and doors, but overall great condition. String lights function but are not very bright and wiring is exposed (batteries not included).
