Description:

Claudio Jimenez Quispe (Peruvian, 1959-present) This crucifix is carved from wood with wire figures covered in a plaster mixed with potatoes - the starchy vegetables form a solid medium to paint with tempera once dry. Claudio Jimenez's art reflects his life growing up in political turmoil and massacres; while Spanish Colonial retablos are traditionally religious, contemporary artists have reclaimed the artform often incorporating historical or cultural themes. Here the brutal Shining Path Communist Party of Peru are represented by soldiers on the upper arm and opposite is a hopeless farmer and dying cow. Claudio Jimenez is brother to Nicario Jimenez, also an internationally renowned retablo artist. Size: 12" L x 3.5" W x 17.2" H (30.5 cm x 8.9 cm x 43.7 cm)
