South America, Peru / Bolivia, Quechua or Aymara culture, ca. 20th century CE. A collection of three handwoven ponchos made from wool (alpaca), or possibly a synthetic and sheep wool blend. Each is made from separately woven panels with a slit for the wearer's head. The poncho serves practical purposes in the high-altitude Andean environment. It provides warmth, protection from the cold wind and wool is naturally water repellent. Traditional Andean clothing, including the poncho, have been handwoven for hundreds of years, the textile is not just a garment, but as a symbol of cultural identity and artistry.
