Description:

Peter Max (American, b. Germany 1937). "Composition Red and Green" color lithograph, 1980. Edition 99 of 165. A lovely multi-colored lithograph by American artist Peter Max titled "Composition Red and Green," featuring a bereted woman seated on a sofa, turning right, all delineated in Max's signature expressive style and vibrant color palette. Posed seductively, the woman's eyes are downcast and her head in profile as she exposes one shoulder to the viewer, coiling tresses cascading down the nape of her neck. Though she appears serene, her surroundings are quite energetic; scattered designs of squares, ovals, and abstract shapes fill the sofa and background, nicely complemented by lively shades of celeste, chartreuse, coral pink, and lime green. A wonderful lithograph by Peter Max, mounted in a custom matte and frame beneath glass. Size of lithograph: 22.5" W x 17.75" H (57.2 cm x 45.1 cm); of paper: 24.75" W x 20.5" H (62.9 cm x 52.1 cm); of frame: 33.25" W x 29" H (84.5 cm x 73.7 cm)

Born in Berlin, Peter Max moved frequently with his family, living in more than six countries until they settled in the United States. Max studied in New York City at the Art Students League, Pratt Institute, and the School of Visual Art. Max was initially revered as a visionary pop artist, beloved for his "Cosmic '60s" style, and this style later evolved to Neo-Expressionism. Max employed a bold linear technique of painting using bold Fauvist colors and intriguing themes. As he evolved from Pop to Neo-Expressionism, his work became more painterly and sensuous, and today his work continues to inspire young artists. Max's unique symbolism and vibrant color palette have continued to inspire new generations of Americans throughout the decades.
