Lot 235
Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973). "Lampe Femme" terre de faience vase, ca. 1955. Inscribed "Edition Picasso" with Edition Picasso and Madoura stamps on the base. A captivating Picasso "Lampe Femme" terre de faience earthenware vase painted in colors - shades of brown, black, and white - partially engraved, and embellished with both glaze and engobe (a colored clay slip that adds both color and texture to the surface). Picasso's "Lampe Femme" which translates to "Woman Lamp" presents the abstract form of a curvaceous woman with long contiguous arms held before her body and a cup-like head presenting a stylized visage that repeats around its circumference. A unique variant apart from Picasso's "Lampe Femme" editions of 100 and 200. Size: 11.25" H (28.6 cm)
Pablo Picasso collaborated with the Madoura pottery studio to create ceramic works for almost 25 years. Georges and Suzanne Ramie founded the Madoura Pottery studio in Vallauris, France. The Ramies are probably best known for their wonderful collaborations with Picasso which resulted in an impressive oeuvre of Picasso ceramics. The Madoura pottery studio (Madoura being an acronym for MAison + DOUly (Suzannes maiden name) + Ramie) opened in an abandoned factory building on April 29th, 1938. Picasso first discovered the Madoura workshop in 1946 and from then on maintained a 24-year collaboration, creating works inspired by his sketches.
