Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Gulf of Papua / Purari Delta region, ca. early 20th century CE. A woven vegetal fiber and cane headdress, likely a Kanipu mask, fashioned with a projecting snout-like form suggestive of a bird or crocodile and adorned with a dense cascade of long vegetal fiber tassels. The head portion is constructed with interlaced basketry techniques, rising in a domed, almost spherical shape, while the dramatic tassels fall from the lower rim to envelop the wearer's body when in use. Such masks were traditionally placed atop the head or integrated into larger ceremonial costumes. While specific symbolic meanings remain little documented, Kanipu masks are thought to embody animist, ancestral, or bush spirits and were used in initiations, rituals, and festivals within local communities. Size: 23" L x 49" H (58.4 cm x 124.5 cm)
