Oceania, Polynesia / Melanesia, likely Solomon Islands, ca. 20th century CE. A beautiful pectoral or neck gorget carved from a single piece of nacre (mother of pearl) shell into a crescent shape, the iridescent surface glimmering with rainbow hues. Nacre shells were prestige items that demonstrated wealth and were used like currency. The half moon or crescent shape carved shell was primarily worn by Polynesian cultures, and the shape was introduced to Melanesia and other islands in the 19th century through expanding trade and whaling routes. Size: 4.125" L x 1.5" W (10.5 cm x 3.8 cm)
