Native American, Western United States, California, Pomo culture, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A fine coiled basketry bowl with a gently flared rim and repeating geometric motifs in tan and dark brown, worked in bundled foundation. The materials are sedge for the ground and dyed bull rush root for the design elements, with the collector's inked initials "DSM" on the interior rim attributed to Emma "Daisy" Shirley McCallum (1859-1953) who formed a significant basket collection in the early 20th century. Size: 5.25" W x 2" H (13.3 cm x 5.1 cm)
Emma Shirley Kelley MacCallum was born in Mendocino in 1859 as Emma Shirley Kelley and was affectionately nicknamed "Daisy" for her bright and engaging personality. She grew up in the house that became the Kelley House Museum. After her marriage, she became known primarily as Daisy MacCallum. She began acquiring Native American baskets in the mid-1880s and went on to assemble one of the largest private collections in the United States, much of which she donated to museums. She purchased works directly from Native makers and developed a reputation as a dedicated collector with broad intellectual curiosity. Reflecting her wide-ranging interests, she traveled to Egypt in 1923 to witness the opening of Tutankhamun's tomb.
