Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, post-conquest Inca, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. A wonderful post-conquest Inca-inspired wooden goblet with an intriguing painted figural program. The squat vessel was turned on a lathe to create its elegant form comprised of an egg-shaped body rising above a tiered discoid foot and short cylindrical neck. Its decorative program consists of a wide register of finely dressed male and female figures, two monkey-like creatures , and two birds with curved beaks and long plumed tails. Underscoring this scene is a narrower register of nested upside down and right side up triangular forms housing traditional step motifs. All is delineated in hues of white, yellow, green, and red atop the chocolate brown ground. A charming example of post-conquest Peruvian artistry! Size: 2.5" in diameter at widest point x 4.75" H (6.4 cm x 12.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-Leonard Lyle Dees collection, Topeka, Kansas, USA, acquired between 1950 and 1970
