Description:

**Originally Listed At $200**

Northern or Western Europe, post-Medieval period, ca. 16th century CE. A finely cast 16th century European leaded brass spoon distinguished by its elegant fig-shaped bowl and slender tapering handle terminating in a knop end. The bowl is softly rounded with a subtle point, echoing late medieval and Renaissance taste for organic, fruit inspired forms. At its center is a petite pierced hole, a deliberate feature that suggests the spoon may have served a ritual or ceremonial function rather than purely domestic use. The small perforation would have allowed liquid to drain or to be dispensed in measured drops, lending the piece to liturgical, medicinal, or apothecary contexts. In the 16th century, spoons were not merely table implements but objects of symbolic and practical importance, used in ecclesiastical rites, christenings, and the preparation of remedies. Size: 5.1" L x 1.6" W (13 cm x 4.1 cm)

The handle extends in a clean, attenuated line and terminates in a simple knop, a rounded finial that provided both visual balance and a secure grip. Such knop ended spoons were common in Northern and Western Europe during the Renaissance, reflecting a transition from Gothic to more restrained classical forms. The surface bears a dark, time worn patina with areas of green oxidation consistent with age, underscoring its material composition and long history. Both refined and utilitarian, this spoon offers a tangible connection to early modern European ritual practice and daily life alike.
