Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Tlatilco or Michoacan, Terminal Pre-Classic Period, ca. 250 CE. A fascinating ceramic mask, depicting a transformation of the god of rain, Chaac (Chac, Chaahk) - he is always portrayed, from the pre-Classic through post-Classic periods, with a blend of human and animal characteristics, as here he has a reptilian-looking pair of eyes and feline-like sharp canines. Chaac masks are found in many parts of southern Mesoamerica, often protruding from buildings, as at Mayapan and Chichen Itza. The earliest known representation of Chaac is a carving in Stela 1 at Izapa, which dates to about ca. 200 CE. Size: 5.6" W x 6.8" H (14.2 cm x 17.3 cm); 7.85" H (19.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
