Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu culture, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A beautiful gathering of three textile fragments composed of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of brown, white, wheat, crimson, and dark-blue. First is a brown strip with four diagonal registers of abstract birds in white, caramel, and dark-grey colors. Second is a thin, red-hued strip with gold peripheries and a central register of abstract avian figures in gold and cobalt hues. Last is a thin, brown panel flanked by two unique strips, one with a register of gold, red, and tan pigments in a diamond motif, and the other with abstract zoomorphic creatures with spiraling tails. Size of largest (two unique strips): 5.625" W x 7.5" H (14.3 cm x 19 cm).
Provenance: private Allison collection, Kent, Washington, USA, inherited in the mid-1970s
