Description:

ORIGINALLY OFFERED AT $600

Pre-Columbian, Central Mexico, Chontal, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. This is a large, marbled, grey-green and white anthropomorphic stone figure. It has a stylized, angular body, with square shoulders, short legs and arms at sides. The face has a jutting chin with long thin nose and large, expressive eyes. This is distinguished from the Guerrero stone axe tradition by its more three-dimensional depiction of the head; however, similar techniques were used to create it. Strings were used to cut out sections and sandstone was used for abrasion to create the final figure. Comes with custom stand. Size: 3.4" W x 6" H (8.6 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Nick Poolos, Chicago, IL, acquired before 1975.
