Description:

Pre-Columbian, South America, Ecuador, Manabi, ca. 500 BCE to 1500 CE; South America, Ecuador, Jamacoaque, ca. 500 BCE to 500 CE; Mesoamerica, Maya, ca. 250 to 900 CE; Central America, Costa Rica, ca. 500 to 1500 CE; Central Mexico, Aztec, ca. 1325 to 1521 CE. A diverse study assemblage of fourteen hand-molded terracotta miniatures highlighted by a fragmentary seated Maya monkey, a rectangular Aztec stamp modeled in low relief with avian and geometric motifs, and two functional whistles including a bird-shaped example; the set further comprises three Costa Rican bird effigies, four Manabi spindle-whorl beads with central perforations and two spherical beads, and a small Jama-Coaque head now affixed to a modern magnet. Fashioned from varied regional clays ranging from buff to reddish tones, these pieces span adornment, textile production, sound-making, and imprinting arts, offering a compact survey of techniques such as hand-building, molding, and piercing. Size of largest (Maya monkey fragment): 2.1" W x 3.7" H (5.3 cm x 9.4 cm)

In Maya imagery the monkey is closely linked to artisanship and scribal creativity, while Aztec stamps were likely used to pattern textiles or to decorate skin and ceramics; comparable stamps and whistles are published in the Museo Nacional de Antropologia, Mexico City, and bird effigies in the Museo del Oro Precolombino, Costa Rica.
