Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Nicoya Peninsula, Nicoya culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-built ceramic tripod bowl, its wide basin supported by three rattle legs modeled in the form of stylized zoomorph heads, which resemble anteaters. The bowl's cream-hued slip is adorned with red and black geometric and curvilinear motifs, both interior and exterior, including crosshatch and chevron patterns and linear forms, exemplifying the bold visual language of Nicoya polychrome ware. The rattles inside the hollow legs would have produced soft sounds during use - possibly in ritual settings. Size: 7" Diameter x 3.75" H (17.8 cm x 9.5 cm)
