Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A fascinating and rare slab figure that depicts a nude female. She stands with her arms raised to her chest. Her breasts and genitals have been strongly emphasized by the artist. Two bands of incised lines with repeated dots pressed into them wrap around her stomach, perhaps indicating a belt, tattoos, or scarification. Her face is incised, with a strong hairline that dips down her forehead in a V. Her eyes and mouth are also incised, with a slight mound forming her nose. Her form in some ways recalls the anthropomorphic figures made by the much earlier Ecuadorian Valdivian culture, with its emphasis on the female form and the shape of the face. Size: 2.25" W x 5.5" H (5.7 cm x 14 cm); 6.55" H (16.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, California, USA
