Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Ibarra Area (Central Highlands), ca. 500 to 1500 CE. A hardstone axe carved from a mottled green hue- perhaps a granite- with a drilled hole and slightly raised ridge just before the curved blade. The hole placement and superb condition of this head indicates a ritualistic rather than utilitarian purpose- perhaps a votive piece for burial or to wear like a pendant to symbolize the power of the bearer. Size: 4.125" L x 2.25" W (10.5 cm x 5.7 cm); 6.75" H (17.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired before 2004
