Pre-Columbian, Moquequa, Chile, Huari/Wari, ca. 600 to 800 CE. A finely woven and braided sash, comprised of camelid fibers, quite colorful in vivid hues of red, rose, brown, and black, with an attractive design of intricate geometric patterns centering on star-like motifs. Size: sash itself measures 12' (3.66 m) L; as arranged on linen: 38" (96.5 cm) x 15" (38.1 cm); including linen: 56" (142.2 cm) x 35" (88.9 cm).

During the seventh and eight centuries, the Huari Empire conquered a vast area of what now constitutes modern-day Peru. Archaeological evidence of the Huari Empire includes fine tapestry-woven textiles featuring colorful and distinctive iconography. Scholars continue to unravel the threads of the historical, political, and cultural stories behind Pre-Columbian textiles.

Provenance: Ex-private Westermann collection, Germany, acquired in the 1950's.
