Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 200 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built and hollow terracotta figure representing a seated female, rendered in the expressive style associated with the shaft tomb tradition of ancient West Mexico. The figure rests on thick legs, arms raised with open hands as if in a trance or orating. Her elongated head is topped by a high, flat headdress, and her features are stylized - narrow slit eyes, a long pointed nose, and incised mouth - creating a solemn, introspective expression. Applied red pigment defines a broad chest band, waistband, and decorative elements on the cheeks and ear ornaments. The figure's ample proportions and nude torso suggest fertility symbolism, a common theme in ancient Mesoamerican figurative sculpture. Figures like this were often placed in tombs, likely serving as attendants, guardians, or representations of the deceased. A striking and archetypal example of Jalisco ceramic artistry. Size: 7.75" W x 11.25" H (19.7 cm x 28.6 cm)
