Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A large seated female figure sculpted from pottery in the distinctive shaft tomb tradition. The broad-shouldered body rests on thick legs and short, outstretched arms, the palms open in a gesture suggestive of offering or ritual invocation. Her expressive face features molded eyelids, a prominent nose, parted lips revealing teeth, and pierced ears, all crowned by a tall, flared headdress. Raised nodules embellish the shoulders and may represent adornment or ritual scarification. The surface is smoothly burnished and covered in a red slip, with areas of cream-toned pigment remaining on the face and shoulders. Such figures were typically placed in tombs to accompany the dead, likely symbolizing ancestral spirits, social identity, or ritual presence. Size: 9.75" W x 11.5" H (24.8 cm x 29.2 cm)
