Pre-Columbian, El Salvador, Copan, Late Classic period, ca. 550 to 850 CE. A most unusual ancient Mayan polychrome pottery tripod from the Copan region of El Salvador, decorated in shades of red, black and orange over tan base with a band of abstract glyphs on both the interior and exterior rims, twin red bands below. The bowl is supported by three unusual cylindrical legs (deliberately left unfinished/open), perhaps to attach termini containing rattles. Size: 9.25" W x 4.75" H (23.5 cm x 12.1 cm)

Provenance: Guy Waters collection, Clearwater, Florida, USA, acquired over the last forty years; ex-private Arizona, USA collection acquired between 1960 and 1970.

  • Condition: Surface wear with scratches and nicks here and there. Some pigment loss as shown, but still quite vivid. Nice manganese deposits. Legs were deliberately unfinished, perhaps to attach termini containing rattles.
