From ancient Mexico, circa 1000 - 1500 CE. Measures approximately 7" in diameter. Includes display stand, as shown. This plate is in the form of a shallow dish, profusely decorated in typical Mixtec polychrome motifs, featuring geometric patterns in orange, red, yellow, black and white, with a central image of the head of what appears to be a reptilian serpent. The central head is shown with long, narrow, open jaws, presenting sharp fangs or teeth. Such examples are relatively rare to find available on the antiquities market. Provenance: Former New York, USA private collection.   • Condition: Intact with ancient minor loss of about a 1/2" by 1 1/2" rim shard, as visible in the photos. Otherwise, there is a small, stable stress line elsewhere on the rim, with other minor chips, abrasions, weathering and wear overall. Mineral and sediment deposits remain, and there is an old museum or collection catalog number indicated on the back. This could be removed with histological acetone, if desired.
