Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia / Ecuador, Narino region, Capuli or Quillacinga culture, ca. 850 to 1500 CE. A figural pottery vessel with modeled limbs along the body and a head bearing low-relief facial features. The umber-red surface is decorated with linear motifs created using a negative-resist technique, where wax or resin was applied to preserve areas of red before covering the vessel in black pigment; during firing, the wax burned away, revealing the red beneath. Cultures of the Narino region held complex beliefs about the afterlife, and burial pits - some as deep as 26 feet (8 meters) - often featured side chambers containing grave goods such as vessels like this one, gold ornaments, and beads, reflecting the status of the deceased. Size: 4" Diameter x 5.25" H (10.2 cm x 13.3 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection, acquired between 1978-1990
