Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Olmec, ca. 650 BCE. Large ceramic cylindrical roller stamp or seal with finely carved feature and wave patterns created and used by the Olmecs. When rolled in ink or dyes, it could print the symbols from its raised carvings onto cloth or human skin as body decoration. Some experts including Mary Pohl (1942-) who with a group of fellow archaeologists found an Olmec stone roller at San Andres, Tabasco, Mexico near La Venta in 2002, believe that the Olmec originated glyph writing in Mesoamerica. [See Mary E. Pohl, Kevin O. Pope, and Christopher von Nagy. "Olmec Origins of Mesoamerican Writing." http://www.anthro.fsu.edu/research/meso/Pohltext.doc (accessed on November 3, 2004)] 3-3/8"H x 3-3/8"D
