Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru (South Coast), Paracas culture, ca. 800 to 100 BCE. Camelid bone carved into the shape of a scepter or finial, capped by a dramatic human figure. The figure holds out a stick of some kind, perhaps representing a musical instrument like a flute, with its hands at a dramatic angle to its arms, which are stretched out as far as they can go. The figure's head has a huge, elongated upper portion, probably indicating the practice of skull shaping, which is known from the Paracas region. The head is adorned with a squared-off headdress. The eyes may once have had inlays or some applied decoration. Size: 2.9" W x 11.1" H (7.4 cm x 28.2 cm); 12.35" H (31.4 cm) on included custom stand.
