Pre-Columbian, Colombia, assorted cultures likely Quimbaya & Tairona, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A collection of 50 assorted pottery spindle whorls gathered together and strung on a modern cord. Most are disc shaped with a flat face and a domed top, and several are incised with white pigment added to the recessed motifs. A spindle whorl is a small, disk-shaped tool used in ancient textile production to add weight and maintain momentum during the spinning of fibers into yarn or thread. Size of strand doubled: 30" L (76.2 cm); largest whorl: 1" W x 1.8" Diameter (2.5 cm x 4.6 cm)

Provenance: private Bethesda, Maryland, USA collection, acquired by descent, collected in 1970s

  • Condition: Chips and small losses, but overall great condition. Old inventory tag on a large incised whorl. Strung in modern times on a cord. Heavy and not recommended for wearing as a necklace due to weight, and potential to chip against itself.
