Description:

**Originally Listed At $300**

North American, probably southeastern United States, Mississippian, Archaic Period, ca. 8000 to 5000 BCE. A grey stone bannerstone, a weight for an atlatl. The stone has been carved to have long, projecting arms and a central area with grooves on top and bottom to allow it to attach onto a circular piece of wood that formed part of the atlatl. The weight gave the atlatl greater projectile power and control. Bannerstones were not just functional, but also probably had ritualistic or symbolic power, and this one has a zoomorphic, possibly avian form that may have served as a talisman to protect the hunter during the dangerous business of the hunt. Comes with custom stand. Size: Size: 9.5" W x 3.4" H (24.1 cm x 8.6 cm); height on stand: 4.6" (11.7 cm)

Provenance: Whisnant Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, acquired over twenty years ago
