Ancient Egypt, Pre-Dynastic period, ca. 4000 to 3000. A pair of artifacts from the early agricultural period of ancient Egypt that set the stage for the glory of the Dynastic period to come: a flattish, roughly oval grinding stone, made from pale sandstone, and a small, round hand stone made from hard volcanic rock. Grain cultivated in this area included emmer wheat, barley, and flax, all of which needed to be ground by hand using tools like these. Size of grinding stone: 9.5" L x 11.75" W x 1.8" H (24.1 cm x 29.8 cm x 4.6 cm)
