Description:

Pre-Columbian, Basin of Mexico, Preclassic Period, Morelos, ca. 500 to 250 BCE. A fascinating and rare style of figure, depicting a woman with a relatively large head, broad shoulders, thin arms that stretch out to her sides, a slender waist, and broad, short legs. She wears a skirt with an impressed motif that resembles leaves as well as an applied headdress and has two spool-shaped earrings. A long plait of hair falls over one shoulder and her face features large incised eyes with raised irises, a slender nose, and a large-lipped mouth. The surface is slipped with a uniform grey color. Morelos is an important part of central Mexican prehistory, once considered to be the origin of the Olmecs with with ties to Tlatilco. Size: 3.8" W x 8.4" H (9.7 cm x 21.3 cm); 9.2" H (23.4 cm) on included custom stand.
