Description:

Lower Sepik River, Papua New Guinea, ca. 19th century. Carved with pre-metal tools, presenting a powerful elongated ovoid form. The forehead is surmounted by a partially eroded animal-form amulet with openwork profile, above a pair of raised, stacked nodes suggestive of eyes. The face is highly expressive, with asymmetrical open eye apertures, a pronounced elongated nose with ribbed septum perforated across and above the nostrils, and an upturned mouth set above a ridged loop at the tip of the chin.
