Description:

Native American, Ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi), Four Corners area, ca. 1075 to 1250 CE. A large black-on-white Anasazi "reserve" bowl created by a woman in the community using the traditional coil and scrape technique, well polished, slipped, and presenting a pearly white surface with its interior walls beautifully decorated by vertical stepped and linear motifs that resemble staffs - possibly a motif relating to storytelling traditions. A deep bowl like this was made for heating and serving food, and ultimately most likely served as a treasured grave good. Size: 8" W x 4.25" H (20.3 cm x 10.8 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection; ex-Mark Brady collection, found on private land at Witches Wells Ranch, Sanders, Arizona, USA
