Description:

Native American, Southern Colorado Plateau, Ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi), ca. 1075 to 1250 CE. A beautiful, hand-built pottery ladle which has been well-polished, slipped, and has a pearly white surface with a finely-painted black decorative program of linear, triangular, and zigzag motifs. The handle has a thick handle with a pronounced forked end, a large scooping bowl, and a thin rim. Made for stirring and serving food, this example was probably ultimately deposited with a deceased member of the community or left in an abandoned domestic space. Size: 10" L x 5.25" W (25.4 cm x 13.3 cm).

  • Condition: Restoration to back half of handle and forked end with some resurfacing and overpainting along break lines and new material. Ladle portion repaired from multiple large pieces with light restoration as well as resurfacing, and overpainting along break lines. Surface wear commensurate with age, small nicks to scoop, rim, and handle, and some fading to original pigmentation. Light earthen deposits throughout.
