Lot 7
Native American, Southwestern United States, Ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi), ca. 1000 to 1250 CE. A striking Ancestral Pueblo stirrup spout vessel, its rounded body wrapped in bold black-on-white zigzags and crowned with an elegant arched handle that turns the pot into sculpture. The form is classic and highly functional: a globular chamber designed for storage or pouring, topped by a stirrup-like arch that rises to a short spout. This design creates a strong grip and a controlled opening, making the vessel as practical in the hand as it is compelling on display. The painted decoration is crisp and rhythmic. Across the body run horizontal bands filled with repeating triangular motifs, creating a serrated pattern that reads like mountains, waves, or woven textiles translated into pigment. Additional linear accents appear on the handle and around the spout, reinforcing the vessel's symmetry and emphasizing the architectural curve of the stirrup form. Size: 6.5" Diameter x 7.6" H (16.5 cm x 19.3 cm)
Black-on-white pottery stands among the most recognizable achievements of Ancestral Pueblo ceramic traditions, prized for its disciplined geometry and the visual clarity of mineral-based paint against pale clay. Vessels like this were part of daily and ceremonial life, and their designs reflect a world in which pattern carried meaning: order, landscape, season, and the measured structure of community. With its confident silhouette and strong graphic surface, this stirrup spout vessel captures the distinctive balance of Ancestral Pueblo art - where utility, design, and visual intelligence meet in fired clay.
