Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), Chaco style, ca. 975 to 1150 CE. This is a stunning hand-coiled black-on-white canteen vessel with knobbed lug handles, globular body, and narrow spout mouth to prevent evaporation; the knobbed lugs on the upper shoulder perhaps secured a stopper plug in place or served as attachments for straps. The exterior is painted in a white slip then covered with black geometric repeating pattens of triangles creating a diamond shape with dots, and thick bands encircle the upper shoulder and above the base. The faces of the lugs are painted with a similar triangular and dotted motif, a classic Chaco style. Anasazi pottery was created by coiling clay and smoothing the surface before painting, then finally firing, and their pottery was an invaluable utilitarian item for storing agricultural goods as well as a beautiful commodity for trading. Size: 5.25" Diameter x 5" H (13.3 cm x 12.7 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private S.S. collection, Los Angeles, California, USA; ex-Outwest Ancient Artifacts, Chandler, Arizona, USA, before 2011
