Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, near Walnut Canyon, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), Kayenta Tradition, Walnut Canyon type, ca. 825 to 1300 CE. A pleasing, piriform pottery jar, intricately hand-painted with dense geometric motifs of the Walnut Canyon black-on-white type. Surmounted by a flared rim, the vessel's body is enveloped in interlocking steppe and triangle motifs, while the concave neck features diagonal sawtooth striations that alternate with interlocking scrolls. Walnut Black-on-white is a Little Colorado White Ware found across the entire range of the state, including from Petrified Forest National Monument to the San Francisco Mountain region, the Tonto Basin, the Verde Valley, and the upper Gila River drainages. - Condition: Missing handle with small area of loss where handle attached to shoulder. Professionally repaired with some light restoration and repainting over break lines, as well as chipping to rim. Nice remains of painted decoration and rich earthen deposits in areas. Old collection labels and number on underside of base.
