Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), Mogollon, Four-Mile type, ca. 1325 to 1400 CE. A gorgeous pottery bowl of hemispherical form adorned with finely-painted black and white on red imagery. The elaborate decoration consists of a crested wave motif on the interior filled with dense linear patterns and geometric motifs, while the exterior features a horizontal register of meandering white striations flanked above and below by thick, black bands. These intricate designs once held great meaning regarding clan and family ties, weather, and geography for the ancient Native Americans. A mesmerizing example from Ancestral Puebloan culture! Fourmile polychrome is a distinctive form of White Mountain Red Ware, distinguished by its intricate decorations of glaze and white clay pigments. The motifs on the interiors of the bowls are often the focus of the center of the bowl, separated from the rest of the bowl by a band or red and a band of black; exteriors usually consist of a series of fine white lines below the rim, as seen in this example.
