Description:

North America, southwest US, New Mexico, Mimbres culture., ca. 950 - 1250 CE. Extremely rare and desirable pottery bowl in traditional Mimbres black-on-white. Hand-built bowl decorated on the interior depicting a Mayan / Aztec mythological scene, showing the extensive reach of Messo-American cultures. The scene shows Quetzalcotl in two forms, one as a deer (his alter-ego) and the other as a priest, each with what is depicted in myth as a "magnificant member." The priest / shaman, identified by his conical ocelot cap, has entered into a trance-state and transcended into his animal alter ego - the deer. Size: 5.875" W x 2.625" H (14.9 cm x 6.7 cm)
