Description:

Native American, southwestern US, New Mexico, Mimbres., ca. 950 - 1300 CE. A fine and important Mimbres black-on-white pottery bowl, the interior decorated with a bold figural composition depicting a standing female rendered in the classic “stick” style, with rectangular head with tattoos on each cheek, shell necklace, patterned female garb and loincloth, and articulated limbs. The figure raises one arm and supports an ear of corn feeding it to parrot perched upon the head. The bowl was "killed" in its center, a ceremony thought to release the spirit of the bowl and subsequently the spirit of the deceased owner. Size: 7.5" W x 3.625" H (19 cm x 9.2 cm)

The inclusion of a parrot is highly significant within Mimbres and broader Ancestral Puebloan iconography. Parrots are not native to the U.S. Southwest and were imported through long-distance trade networks extending into Mesoamerica, especially with the Casas Grandes Indians of northern Mexico. Their depiction signals;
Status and Prestige: Ownership or association with exotic birds implied wealth and social standi
Ritual and Symbolic Importance: Parrots were linked to solar imagery, color symbolism, and ceremonial life and;
Evidence of Trade Networks: The motif underscores the far-reaching exchange systems connecting the Southwest with northern Mexico.
