Description:

**Originally Listed At $400**

Native American, Anasazi (Ancestral Pueblo), Southwest United States, ca. 900 to 1300 CE. A rare and evocative stone paint palette, once used by the ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi) peoples of the American Southwest. The palette is carefully shaped from a flat slab of sandstone, its smooth surface bearing traces of use where pigments were likely ground and mixed. One edge has been worked into a gentle raised contour, possibly to keep pigment contained during preparation. Such palettes were indispensable tools in Anasazi artistic and ceremonial life, used for grinding minerals into powders for body decoration, pottery painting, or ritual objects. The Anasazi are celebrated for their polychrome ceramics, cliff dwellings, and intricate mural painting traditions, and objects like this palette reveal the technical processes behind these artistic achievements. Size: 10.4" L x 7.4" W x 0.7" H (26.4 cm x 18.8 cm x 1.8 cm)

This piece offers a direct link to the creative and spiritual practices of the ancient Southwest, carrying the tactile memory of the artist's hand as they ground colors to animate vessels, walls, or sacred bodies.
